Plain English
Estonia’s e-Residency is a digital identity program that lets non-residents access Estonian online services and register and run an EU-based company entirely remotely. It is not physical residency — you do not get the right to live in Estonia — but you get a legal digital identity and the ability to operate a real EU company.
How it actually works
You apply online, pay a fee, and receive a digital ID card (or app-based equivalent) that lets you sign documents, file taxes, and operate an Estonian company. The most common use: digital nomads and remote consultants who register an Estonian OU (limited company), invoice clients globally, and benefit from Estonia’s simple corporate tax regime (0% on retained earnings, taxed only on distributions).
What it means for you
For digital-nomad members earning consulting or service income internationally, e-Residency offers an EU-based business identity without requiring physical relocation. It is a structural tool, not a tax-residency play — you still owe personal income tax wherever you actually live.
We touch on e-Residency as one of several jurisdictional tools for digital nomads. The structural lesson: corporate residency and personal tax residency are separate decisions; e-Residency addresses only the former.
