Plain English

zkSync is a zero-knowledge rollup L2 by Matter Labs that uses cryptographic validity proofs to settle batches to Ethereum. ZK proofs mean withdrawals to L1 are fast (hours, not days) and the chain inherits hard mathematical guarantees rather than challenge-period assumptions. ZK is the governance token.

How it actually works

zkSync Era is the user-facing L2; ZK Stack is the open-source toolkit anyone can use to deploy their own ZK rollup (“Hyperchain”) that interoperates with the rest of the network. The chain is EVM-compatible but not equivalent — some contracts need adaptation.

What it means for you

ZK rollups represent the long-term direction of L2 scaling — better finality, better privacy, smaller proofs as proving systems improve. zkSync is one of the leading deployments. The trade-off versus optimistic rollups is tooling maturity, though that gap is closing fast.
