Plain English

Avalanche is a high-throughput L1 by Ava Labs. The main C-Chain is EVM-compatible, so Ethereum tools work directly. Avalanche’s differentiator is “subnets” — custom blockchains anyone can launch with their own validator set, gas token, and rules, all secured by AVAX staking. AVAX is the native token.

How it actually works

Avalanche uses the Avalanche Consensus protocol — a novel mechanism that achieves sub-second finality with leaderless block production. The platform splits into three chains: X-Chain (assets), C-Chain (smart contracts), and P-Chain (validators and subnets). The Avalanche9000 upgrade in 2024 dropped subnet validator costs dramatically.

What it means for you

Avalanche has positioned heavily into institutional and gaming subnets — Citi, JPMorgan, and various gaming studios have launched on dedicated chains. For HNW, AVAX is more of an enterprise/institutional play than a retail DeFi bet. Subnet token launches occasionally offer asymmetric upside but require diligence on each.
