Plain English
NEAR Protocol is a sharded PoS L1 launched in 2020. NEAR is the native token. Differentiators: human-readable account names (“alice.near” instead of 0x addresses), low fees, and “chain abstraction” tools that let users interact with multiple chains from one NEAR account.
How it actually works
NEAR uses Nightshade sharding to split the chain into multiple parallel shards for scale. Validators rotate across shards each epoch. The chain pioneered chain-signatures — letting NEAR accounts control Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other chain addresses without bridging, via MPC threshold signatures.
What it means for you
NEAR’s strength is consumer UX. For HNW positioning, the chain-abstraction roadmap is the most interesting angle — controlling a multi-chain portfolio from a single NEAR account simplifies operations significantly. NEAR also has a meaningful AI-agent narrative through the NEAR AI initiative.
