Plain English

Algorand is a 2019 proof-of-stake L1 founded by MIT professor Silvio Micali. ALGO is the native token. Designed for fast finality, low fees, and an elegant pure-PoS protocol where every ALGO holder participates in consensus probabilistically rather than via delegation.

How it actually works

Algorand uses VRF (verifiable random function) to randomly select block proposers and committees each round. Transactions finalize in ~3 seconds with no forks. Native asset issuance (ASA) and atomic transfers enable RWA tokenization without smart-contract complexity. Smart contracts run in TEAL.

What it means for you

ALGO is a research-heavy, slow-cycle L1. For HNW positioning, it is a defensive play in the L1 space — strong tech, weaker ecosystem traction, modest staking yield. Most interesting use cases are in RWA tokenization (Lofty, Hesab Pay) where the formal verification properties matter.
