Internet Computer is a 2021 L1 by Dfinity Foundation. ICP is the native token. Differentiator: full web applications (frontend, backend, database) can run entirely on-chain via reverse-gas model — users do not need wallets or pay gas; developers pay “cycles” for compute.
How it actually works
ICP uses Chain Key cryptography combining BLS threshold signatures and a subnet architecture. Canisters (smart contracts) hold state and serve HTTP requests directly. Native integration with Bitcoin (Chain Key BTC) lets ICP smart contracts directly send and receive BTC without bridges.
What it means for you
ICP is one of the most technically ambitious L1s and one of the most controversial — early VC unlocks and centralization concerns hit the price hard. For HNW positioning, ICP is a contrarian bet on Web3 hosting going mainstream. Native staking yields ~7–9% with multi-month locks.
