Plain English

Coinbase is the largest US-regulated crypto exchange, founded in 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam. Public since 2021 (NASDAQ: COIN). Offers retail trading via Coinbase, advanced trading via Coinbase Advanced (formerly Pro), institutional services via Coinbase Prime, and runs Base, an Ethereum L2.

How it actually works

Operates under US state money-transmitter licenses and NYDFS BitLicense. Reserves are 1:1 backed, with quarterly SOC audits. Retail fees are 0.6% spot (high); Coinbase Advanced fees are 0.4% taker / 0.25% maker dropping with volume. Holds approximately 12% of all Bitcoin and acts as custodian for most US spot Bitcoin ETFs.

What it means for you

For US-based HNW users, Coinbase is the most regulatorily-aligned on-ramp. Higher retail fees are offset by tax reporting integration, insurance on hot-wallet balances, and the operational comfort of a public company custodian. Use Coinbase Advanced for execution, withdraw to self-custody for holding.
