Plain English
Ledger is the most-shipped hardware wallet brand in crypto, headquartered in Paris. Product line includes Nano S Plus (entry-level $79), Nano X (Bluetooth-enabled $149), and Ledger Stax (E-Ink touchscreen $399). Companion app: Ledger Live.
How it actually works
Private keys are stored on a certified secure element chip (CC EAL5+) that never exposes them to the connected computer. Supports 5,000+ assets across 50+ blockchains. Bluetooth connectivity on Nano X / Stax is unrelated to the security model. A 2023 customer-data breach affected ~270K customer addresses and phone numbers (not funds).
What it means for you
Ledger is the default hardware wallet recommendation, especially for users holding multiple chains. For long-term Bitcoin-only storage, Coldcard or Trezor (open-source firmware) are more conservative choices. Always buy directly from Ledger.com — secondhand or non-direct hardware wallets are a known supply-chain attack vector.
