Plain English

Coldcard is a Bitcoin-only hardware wallet by Coinkite, designed for security-maximalist users. Models: Coldcard Mk4 ($149), Coldcard Q (with display, ~$200). Famous for the “Air-Gap” mode — operating without ever connecting to a computer via SD card transfers only.

How it actually works

Open-source firmware. Dual secure elements (Mk4) and physical anti-tamper protections. Supports BIP-39 seed phrases plus advanced BIP-85 child seeds. PSBT (Partially Signed Bitcoin Transactions) for full air-gapped workflows. Hardware-level duress PIN, brick-me PIN, and brick-on-failed-attempts options.

What it means for you

Coldcard is the hardware wallet for Bitcoin holders who want the most paranoid setup available. For multi-coin users, it has no utility — Bitcoin only. For 7-figure-plus BTC holdings or Bitcoin-only treasuries, Coldcard with air-gapped PSBT signing is the gold standard. Pair with a multisig setup for serious treasury operations.
