Plain English

DeFi Pulse was the original DeFi TVL aggregator, launched in 2019 by Concourse Open Community. Coined the term “TVL” (Total Value Locked) as a DeFi metric. The DPI (DeFi Pulse Index) token was an index of major DeFi tokens. The site was discontinued in 2023; DeFiLlama has been the de facto replacement.

How it actually works

At its peak, DeFi Pulse tracked the major Ethereum DeFi protocols (Maker, Compound, Aave, Curve, Uniswap, etc.) and produced the canonical TVL chart cited in countless articles. The site operated free with minimal team; eventually replaced by more comprehensive tools (DeFiLlama).

What it means for you

DeFi Pulse is historical context. For current TVL and protocol monitoring, DeFiLlama has fully replaced it. Worth knowing the lineage — the metric “TVL” and the framing of DeFi as a tracked category started here.
