Plain English
Hop Protocol is a bridge specifically designed for fast transfers between Ethereum L1 and L2s, and between L2s. Launched in 2021. HOP is the governance token. Uses Hop Bonders — capital providers who front the bridged asset on the destination chain for fast settlement.
How it actually works
For each supported asset, “h-tokens” (hUSDC, hETH) circulate in dedicated AMM pools on each chain. Bonders post collateral to facilitate fast bridging; they’re reimbursed via the slow exit lane after Ethereum settlement finalizes. Typical bridge time is 5-10 minutes.
What it means for you
Hop was an early leader in fast L2 bridging. Across has largely overtaken it for L2-L1 transfers, but Hop remains relevant for L2-to-L2 transfers without going through Ethereum mainnet. For HNW users moving capital between L2s frequently, Hop is one option to compare against Stargate and Across.
