Plain English

Anchorage Digital is the first federally-chartered crypto bank in the US, holding an OCC national trust charter granted in 2021. Founded in 2017 by Diogo Mónica and Nathan McCauley (ex-Square Cash). Targets institutional and HNW custody plus financial services.

How it actually works

National trust charter provides the strongest US regulatory framework available for crypto custody. Hardware Security Modules plus biometric and multi-party access controls. Supports staking for ETH, SOL, ATOM, and other PoS assets within custody. Provides crypto-collateralized loans for institutional clients.

What it means for you

For US-based HNW principals and family offices, Anchorage offers the most-regulated crypto custody option available — equivalent to federally-chartered traditional bank custody. Higher minimums than retail-tier custody but the regulatory comfort is meaningful for institutional reporting and tax positioning.
