Decentraland is one of the oldest blockchain virtual worlds, launched in 2020. Users own parcels of LAND and can build experiences on them. MANA is the currency. Reached significant metaverse hype peak in 2021-22 with brand activations (Samsung, Coca-Cola); engagement has substantially declined since.
How it actually works
Browser-based virtual world. LAND NFTs are the underlying asset; MANA for transactions. Hosts events, conferences, and experiences. Active monthly users have dropped substantially from 2022 peak. The platform continues to operate but with reduced traffic and developer interest.
What it means for you
Decentraland faces the same challenges as The Sandbox — declining engagement, illiquid LAND market, MANA dependent on usage. For HNW users, exposure is more of a contrarian metaverse bet than a clear thesis. Position size cautiously.
