Argent is a smart-contract wallet pioneer, founded in 2017. The original product was an Ethereum mobile wallet with social recovery (no seed phrases, recover via trusted contacts called “Guardians”). Now also supports Argent X for Starknet and various L2 implementations.
How it actually works
Each user wallet is a smart contract on Ethereum or Starknet. No seed phrase to back up — recovery via Guardians (2 of 3 must approve a recovery transaction). Built-in DeFi access to Aave, Compound, Lido. Daily transfer limits and 2FA built into the contract.
What it means for you
Argent introduced account abstraction to consumer crypto years before ERC-4337. For users uncomfortable with seed phrases (which is most people), Argent’s recovery model is the most-tested alternative. Gas fees can be higher than EOA wallets since each transaction goes through the contract. Particularly strong on Starknet ecosystem.
