Plain English
A block explorer is a website that indexes a blockchain and lets you look up any address, transaction, block, or smart contract. Etherscan (Ethereum), Solscan (Solana), Mempool.space (Bitcoin), Arbiscan (Arbitrum). They are the public reference for what is true on-chain.
How it actually works
Explorers run their own full nodes and index the data into a searchable database. Paste in a wallet address — you see balance, every token held, every transaction, every contract interaction. Paste a TXID — you see the transaction’s exact effects, including events emitted by smart contracts.
What it means for you
Three habits that pay for themselves: (1) Always verify a contract address on the explorer before approving a token spend. (2) Check your own wallet on the explorer monthly to spot unfamiliar approvals or dust. (3) Before sending real money to any new dApp, look at the contract on the explorer — read the source if it is verified, check the deployer, check recent transactions.
