Plain English

Coinbase Wallet is a separate self-custody wallet app from Coinbase the exchange. Different product, different keys, different security model — Coinbase the company does not control your funds in Coinbase Wallet. Browser extension and mobile app.

How it actually works

Supports Ethereum, all major L2s, Solana, and Bitcoin. Default RPC routing through Coinbase Cloud nodes for reliability. Integrates with Coinbase Smart Wallet (account-abstraction wallet that uses passkeys instead of seed phrases) for new users. Native USDC support with gasless transactions on Base.

What it means for you

Coinbase Wallet bridges users from the regulated CEX into DeFi smoothly. The Coinbase Smart Wallet (passkey-based) is one of the easiest onboarding flows in crypto for users who don’t want to manage seed phrases. For HNW users, the explicit Coinbase brand provides some operational comfort; security model is otherwise comparable to MetaMask.
