Plain English
CoinMarketCap (CMC) is the longest-running crypto price aggregator, founded in 2013. Acquired by Binance in 2020. Tracks essentially all crypto assets and their prices, market caps, and trading volumes. Free public access; APIs for developers.
How it actually works
Token listings can be controversial — Binance ownership creates conflict-of-interest concerns. Historical price data, exchange listings, supply schedules, and basic metrics. Mobile apps for tracking portfolios. ICO/airdrop sections and ranks-by-trending categories.
What it means for you
For HNW users, CoinMarketCap is fine for quick reference but CoinGecko’s independence is preferred for serious reporting. Both have similar data quality on top-100 tokens; divergences appear on smaller or controversial listings where editorial choices matter.
