Plain English

eToro is a multi-asset trading platform founded in 2007 in Israel. Offers crypto trading alongside stocks, forex, and commodities. Famous for its CopyTrader feature — automatically replicating top traders’ moves. Public via SPAC merger in 2024.

How it actually works

Crypto trading carries a 1% buy/sell fee (high relative to dedicated crypto exchanges). Limited withdrawal of actual crypto (varies by jurisdiction) — much of the platform operates as CFD-style “synthetic” exposure rather than spot crypto. Heavily licensed: CySEC, FCA, ASIC, US FinCEN.

What it means for you

eToro suits beginners and multi-asset traders who want crypto exposure alongside traditional assets in one platform. For HNW users, the 1% fees and limited self-custody options make it less efficient than dedicated crypto exchanges. Useful as an introduction; not as primary execution for size.
