Plain English
Foundry is a Rust-based Ethereum development toolkit by Paradigm, launched in 2021. Differentiator: significantly faster compilation and testing than Hardhat. Tests are written in Solidity (rather than JavaScript/TypeScript), which appeals to many developers. Has rapidly gained share from Hardhat.
How it actually works
Core tools: forge (testing and deployment), cast (CLI for chain interactions), anvil (local Ethereum network). Test framework supports fuzz testing, invariant testing, and gas snapshots out of the box. Strong on advanced security testing workflows.
What it means for you
Foundry has become the default for security-conscious smart contract development. For HNW users commissioning audited custom contracts, asking whether the team uses Foundry (rather than just Hardhat) is a reasonable proxy for development sophistication. Foundry-based projects tend to have better security testing built-in.
