Plain English
Liquidity mining is earning a protocol’s native governance token as a reward for providing liquidity or using the protocol. Compound’s 2020 launch of COMP rewards is what kicked off “DeFi Summer.”
How it actually works
The protocol allocates a portion of its token emissions to users who supply liquidity, lend, borrow, or stake. Rewards accrue proportionally to your usage. The economic logic is bootstrapping: pay users to use the protocol while it builds liquidity, network effects, and revenue. The risk is dilution — tokens distributed at high prices often crash when emissions exceed organic demand.
What it means for you
For members participating in a protocol’s liquidity-mining program, the structural question is whether the token rewards reflect real demand or short-term emissions theater. Sustainable protocols transition off heavy emissions; unsustainable ones collapse.
We cover liquidity-mining due diligence: token emission schedules, vesting, value accrual, and the warning signs that a program is engineered to dump on retail.
