Plain English

StarkNet is an Ethereum ZK rollup L2 developed by StarkWare. Uses Cairo, a programming language optimized for ZK proofs (not EVM-compatible). STRK token launched in 2024 via large airdrop. Validity proofs aggregate via STARKs rather than SNARKs (no trusted setup needed).

How it actually works

Different from EVM L2s — contracts must be written or migrated to Cairo. Provides higher theoretical throughput than EVM-based ZK rollups. Native account abstraction since launch (no EOAs). Major projects include Ekubo (DEX), Argent X (wallet), and various Starknet-native DeFi.

What it means for you

For HNW users, StarkNet is a longer-term technical bet — strong cryptographic foundations but smaller ecosystem than EVM L2s. STRK staking will launch in 2025 with the consensus migration. Worth monitoring as Cairo developer adoption grows; not a primary deployment target for most users yet.
