Plain English

LayerZero is a cross-chain messaging protocol launched in 2022, providing the underlying infrastructure for many bridges (Stargate is a flagship example). ZRO token launched in 2024 via airdrop. Now supports 80+ chains.

How it actually works

Uses a two-component verification model: a relayer and an oracle independently attest to messages, requiring both to collude to compromise the system. DVN (Decentralized Verifier Network) architecture in V2 lets each application choose its own security configuration. Used by hundreds of projects for cross-chain functionality.

What it means for you

LayerZero is infrastructure rather than a direct user-facing product — most users interact with it via Stargate, Wormhole, or other bridge UIs built on top. For HNW users, ZRO is a leveraged bet on cross-chain activity growth overall. Holding it means betting on the omnichain thesis rather than any single bridge.
