Plain English
Blockscout is an open-source block explorer, used as the default explorer on many L2s and alternative chains. Supports EVM-compatible chains via configurable deployments. Differentiator: open-source code lets any chain deploy a self-hosted Etherscan-equivalent explorer.
How it actually works
Indexes blocks, transactions, contracts, and tokens. Used by many L2s as their official explorer (Optimism, Gnosis Chain, others). API access for developers. Slower iteration than Etherscan on cutting-edge features but free and verifiable.
What it means for you
For HNW users on multi-chain workflows, you’ll encounter Blockscout deployments alongside Etherscan-family explorers. Functionality is similar; the choice is usually determined by which L2 you’re using. Useful as part of cross-validation when investigating sketchy transactions — use both Blockscout and Etherscan deployments where available.
