Plain English

Lightning Network is Bitcoin’s primary L2, launched in 2018. Enables fast, cheap Bitcoin payments through off-chain payment channels — instant settlement, fees of fractions of a cent. Used widely in El Salvador after Bitcoin adoption as legal tender, by Strike for international payments, and inside Cash App.

How it actually works

Two parties open a payment channel by jointly funding a multi-sig Bitcoin address; transactions update channel state off-chain; final balances settle to Bitcoin mainnet on channel close. Lightning routing finds payment paths through networks of channels. Wallet implementations include Phoenix, Breez, Blixt, and the original Lightning Labs LND.

What it means for you

For HNW Bitcoin holders, Lightning is the way to actually spend BTC — particularly for recurring payments, international transfers, and merchant settlement. Strike and Cash App Lightning integration makes it usable without running a node. For technical users, running a personal Lightning node provides full self-custody routing and revenue from routing fees.
