Plain English

A memecoin is a crypto token with no claim to underlying utility — its value is the joke, the brand, and the community. Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, Pepe, Bonk, Dogwifhat. They are explicitly speculative; the holders know it, the founders rarely pretend otherwise.

How it actually works

Most memecoins are launched as fair-launch tokens on Solana or Ethereum, with no team allocation, no roadmap, and no promises. Liquidity is seeded on a DEX; price discovery is pure attention. Some develop real cultural mass and persist for years; the vast majority round-trip to zero within months.

What it means for you

Memecoins are an asset class in the literal sense — they have buyers, sellers, and a price — but they are closer to lottery tickets than investments. The reasonable HNW approach: a small “moonshot” allocation (1–3% of crypto, capped), entered with stop-losses or scheduled profit-taking, fully aware the base-case outcome is loss.
