Plain English
Polkadot is a multi-chain L1 created by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood. Parachains lease security from a central Relay Chain by bonding DOT tokens. Each parachain runs its own application logic but inherits Polkadot’s validator security. The narrative competitor to Cosmos’s sovereign-chain model.
How it actually works
Parachain slots are acquired through auctions where projects crowdfund DOT to bond for a lease (typically 2 years). The Relay Chain has limited slots; the upcoming “Agile Coretime” model is replacing fixed slots with flexible block-time purchases. Substrate is the framework used to build chains, popular for sovereign projects beyond Polkadot itself.
What it means for you
Polkadot is a longer-cycle play than most L1s — the developer experience is excellent, but ecosystem traction has lagged Cosmos and Ethereum L2s. For HNW positioning, DOT is a contrarian bet on the parachain model evolving into a competitive multi-chain hub. Best evaluated alongside specific parachain projects like Moonbeam, Acala, and Astar.
