Plain English

Railgun is a privacy protocol on Ethereum, Polygon, BSC, and Arbitrum. Provides shielded wallets — users can deposit tokens into a private balance, then transfer or use them in DeFi while keeping balances and amounts hidden from public chain observers. Includes compliance features to exclude OFAC-sanctioned addresses.

How it actually works

Uses zk-SNARK proofs to validate transactions without revealing amounts, sender, or receiver. The “Railway” interface integrates with DeFi protocols (Uniswap, Aave) so users can swap and lend from their shielded balance. RAIL is the governance token. Maintains a public blocklist preventing sanctioned addresses from using the system.

What it means for you

For HNW users wanting active financial privacy on EVM chains, Railgun is the most-functional production protocol available today. Trade-offs: gas costs are higher than transparent transactions, liquidity is shallower, and the compliance layer requires trusting the blocklist administrators. Best used for specific transactions where privacy matters, not as a default.
