Plain English

Remix is a browser-based Solidity IDE for developing, compiling, debugging, and deploying smart contracts on Ethereum. Maintained by the Ethereum Foundation. Free, no installation required. Used heavily for learning Solidity and quick contract experiments.

How it actually works

Runs entirely in the browser with built-in compiler, debugger, and deployment tools. Supports connecting to MetaMask for live mainnet deployment. Plugins extend functionality (gas estimation, security analysis, decompiler). Most common starting point for Solidity beginners.

What it means for you

For HNW users, Remix’s relevance is occasional — verifying simple contract interactions, reading contract source from Etherscan with a debugger, or quick testing. Most production-grade development moves to Hardhat or Foundry. Knowing Remix exists helps you have technical conversations with developers about quick-iteration workflows.
