Plain English
A watch-only wallet is imported with just the public key or address — never the private key. It can show you the balance and transaction history in real time, but cannot sign or send anything. It is the safest way to monitor cold storage.
How it actually works
Most major wallets (Trezor Suite, Ledger Live, Sparrow, Specter, Rabby) support adding addresses or public keys in watch-only mode. The app polls the blockchain and displays activity exactly as if the wallet were live, but the “send” function is disabled because there is no private key present.
What it means for you
If you hold significant crypto in cold storage, you should not be plugging in the hardware wallet every time you want to check your balance. A watch-only wallet on your phone lets you monitor your treasury safely. The hardware wallet only comes out when it is time to actually spend.
