Plain English

Hardhat is a leading Ethereum development environment for compiling, testing, and deploying smart contracts. Developed by Nomic Foundation. Open-source. The most-used development framework alongside Foundry, and widely the default for new Solidity projects post-2021.

How it actually works

Local Ethereum network for testing, plugins ecosystem (Hardhat Network, Etherscan verification, gas reporting, etc.), and TypeScript support for tests. Hardhat Ignition (deployment manager) provides declarative contract deployment workflows.

What it means for you

For HNW users, Hardhat is mostly invisible — it’s a developer tool. If you commission custom smart contracts (treasury operations, custom vaults, etc.), your developers likely use Hardhat or Foundry. Knowing it exists helps you have informed conversations about smart-contract project quality and dependency choices.
