Plain English
Axie Infinity is the original crypto play-to-earn game, launched in 2018 by Sky Mavis (Vietnam). At its peak in 2021, hundreds of thousands of players in the Philippines and Latin America earned full-time incomes playing. AXS and SLP are the dual tokens. Hosts its own Ronin Network (Ethereum sidechain).
How it actually works
Players battle NFT creatures (“Axies”) in PvE and PvP modes. Earn SLP (Smooth Love Potion) from gameplay; spend SLP to breed new Axies. The play-to-earn economy collapsed in 2022 as SLP value crashed; the game has since evolved with new modes (Axie Origins, Axie Homeland) but never recovered peak engagement. Ronin Network suffered a $625M hack in 2022.
What it means for you
Axie Infinity is mostly a cautionary tale on crypto game economic design. AXS is now a small allocation in the gaming token category; SLP is even less interesting. For HNW positioning, Axie’s lessons (extraction economies break, infinite emissions destroy tokens) apply to most other GameFi projects.
